ABOUT THE PRINTWORKS
The Printworks building (as we know it) is one of the more prominent buildings of Manchester.
A printing press was housed in the building until 1985. It was bought by the "infamous newspaper mogul Robert Maxwell for £1," this raised immediate concern for everyone who worked there. The building was then renamed 'Maxwell House,' "and Maxwell went on to close the plant the following year, in the wake of a scandal."
Robert Maxwell grew his company too quickly, borrowed more money than he could afford, eventually he raided the pension fund "to prop up his company." The building subsequently closed and lay empty for more than a decade and Robert Maxwell died November 5th, 1991. He was found "floating in the Atlantic Ocean after he fell overboard from his yacht."
In 1996, after the IRA bombing, in Manchester, it was purchased in 1998 by Shudehill Developments, which was "made up of the Co-operative Wholesale Society and Co-operative Insurance Society. It was renamed The Printworks to reflect its history, redeveloped in a huge £110 million transformation as part of the Exchange Square project, and opened as an entertainment centre."
On November 9th, 2000,the building was opened by Sir Alex Ferguson and Lionel Richie, which became "a new, 365-square foot facility over four floors. The Printworks now houses an Odeon cinema complex, with the first IMAX screen in the north west, a Nuffield Health fitness club, and Tiger Tiger nightclub, and A-listers have continued to frequent it."
My Comments:
The reason why I have used the Printworks for my artwork is that I have always known it to be one of the more prominent in Manchester and I wanted my project to show the old and the new buildings and this is an old building that has been transformed and became a new/er building.
